Construction Applications

Construction permits are required when:
You construct, enlarge, repair, renovate, alter, reconstruct or demolish a building or structure or you change the use of a building. The purpose of the permit is to allow our inspectors to observe the progress of the work to be sure it is safe and meets code. The permit consists of five different Subcode sections as needed. They are Building, Electric, Plumbing, Fire, and Elevator.  Often, a zoning permit is also required to ensure compliance with the Zoning Ordinance.

NOTE:  Most exterior improvements in the business districts require Historic Preservation Commission approval.  Please see the Historic Preservation Commision webpage for details.

Work that does not require a permit:

These are usually items that represent ordinary maintenance:
Examples are: painting and carpeting in residential structures, replacement of storm windows and doors of the same size openings, wall paper, replacement of kitchen cabinets, etc.

We strongly encourage you to call the Construction Office to see if a permit is needed.

Requirements:
You must complete a Permit Application, applications are available from the Clerks office daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A description the work to be done must be completed and submitted to be reviewed by the appropriate Subcode official(s). If it is rejected the applicant is notified of the reason. If it is approved, it is processed and you will be notified of the cost and when to pick up the completed permit.  You may also be required to submit a zoning permit application.  See Zoning Department page for details.

Dumpsters: All projects that require dumpsters will need to apply for a DUMPSTER PERMIT application and information sheet.
