A Sweet Anniversary
Pennsauken native Catherine Gray began her journey to baker extraordinaire as a stay at home mom to three looking for a creative way to support her family. Catherine began learning simple cake decorating techniques and, with the help of You Tube videos, became a self-taught expert decorator. Now, her Merchantville store front, located at 21 S. Centre St, prepares to celebrate its first anniversary Feb. 8 through the 12.
“A bakery is something that every community needs. It gives the community access to desserts and products they may not have had,” says Gray. And that is just what brought her store to Merchantville. Looking around the town, Gray recognized a missing piece among the restaurants, salons, and retail stores: a bakery. Gray explains, “People like to eat and food is a main driving force in a downtown. Having a bakery is another reason to stay in Merchantville and have it all close by.”
Her proudest accomplishment this past year? Follow through. “I said it and I did it. We set goals and made plans and it all came together.” Despite opening in a pandemic and faced with challenges that shook even the most established businesses, Gray found creative solutions to meet her customers needs and continue offering her signature cakes and desserts. The future of Cat’s Creations looks bright with plans to expand both the menu and extras like decorating classes, online sales and shipping cross country.
